Today was my first run in a new shoe, the Inov-8 X-Talon 225. We were over at Burrington Combe in the Mendips for a family walk and I took the opportunity afforded by a cafe break to nip out for a quick run.
The shoes were Laura’s selection based on what she knows I like for an off-road shoe: lightweight, good grip / lugs, good groundfeel, zero or low heel-to-toe drop. These ticked all of those boxes but also offered something a little different to my previous off-road shoe, the Altra Superior 2.0.
At first I was concerned at whether the toebox was big enough – my toes have been a little spoiled by the Altras. However a couple of minutes in and I’d got used to the fit. My run was pretty much 2 miles up a big hill and 2 miles back down, so on the way up everything was fine, the real test was the downhill. The shoes passed with flying colours (red, in this case). Really good control flying downhill on rocky terrain. I was supposed to be sticking to 70% max heart rate per coach’s instructions but I’m afraid that went out the window, I was having too much fun.
These shoes have gone straight into my “favourite shoe” slot. Last year’s faves were my final pair of Inov-8 Bare Grips, a shoe I feel in love with just as it was discontinued. I had thought I’d never find another shoe I liked so much, but this might just be it.
Well done Inov-8! Keep ’em coming 🙂
